Fort William, Scotland –– In a monumental achievement that combines human resolve, athletic prowess, and a touching tribute, former professional rugby union player Iain Sinclair has become the first person to swim the full length of the 200-year-old Caledonian Canal. Sinclair’s eight-day odyssey was a personal challenge and a memorial to the late Jenny Hastings, wife of former Scotland rugby international Scott Hastings.

Sinclair, 48, embarked on this daunting feat on August 28, 2025, starting at Corpach near Fort William. He traversed the canal’s 60 miles, passing through four lochs and 29 lock gates, completing around six hours of swimming each day in the cold, dark blue water. Permitted by Scottish Canals, Sinclair’s swim is a world-first achievement, as no one has previously swum the entire length of the canal connecting the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

Remembering Jenny Hastings

Jenny Hastings, an ardent mental health advocate, took her own life last year at the age of 60. She had gone missing during a swim at Wardie Bay in Edinburgh and was later found in the same area. Sinclair, a friend of the Hastings family and a keen mental health advocate himself, decided to honor Jenny’s memory by taking on this extreme swimming challenge.

“Jenny had courageously battled her mental health challenges and inspired many through her love of outdoor swimming,” Sinclair told BBC Breakfast earlier this month. He also dedicated the swim to his late friend Colin Maguire, who passed away suddenly from a heart attack in 2024.

Scott Hastings: “In total awe of Iain’s achievement”

Scott Hastings, Jenny’s husband, was emotional as he greeted Sinclair upon his completion of the challenge in Inverness. He shared his admiration on social media: “Words can’t express how proud I am of @iainsinclair9. I’m in total awe of what he’s achieved. Jenny would’ve been thrilled and proud to see this in her memory. A true friend and legend.”
