Mom of Three Sets Guinness World Record for Ireland Foot Crossing
Sophie Power, a passionate runner and mother of three from Surrey, has achieved an incredible feat by setting a new Guinness World Record for the fastest female crossing of Ireland on foot. Power, who is 43 years old, completed the journey from Malin Head to Mizen Head in just three days, 12 hours, and eight minutes.
The Record-Breaking Journey
- Power covered nearly 672km (418 miles) in her record-breaking run.
- She had to maintain an average pace of just under 170km (105 miles) per day to beat the previous record set by Mimi Anderson in 2012.
- The new record holder faced challenging weather conditions, including heavy rain and high temperatures, and even experienced hallucinations during the run.
A Family Achievement
“It was a family record.” – Sophie Power
Although Power is the one who put in the exceptional effort, she firmly believes that her children – Donnacha (10), Cormac (7), and Saoirse (7) – and her husband John are just as much a part of this incredible accomplishment. The boys were even present in a camper van during parts of the journey, while her daughter met her halfway through in Cork.
From Ultra Runner to Guinness World Record Holder
Power began her journey into ultra marathon running in her mid-20s and has since become an inspiration for women of all ages and abilities. In 2018, she went viral after breastfeeding her then three-month-old son during a 169km (105-mile) race. This moment led her to found SheRACES, an organization dedicated to encouraging women to participate in running.
“That’s the image that completely changed my life, it went viral around the entire world. Before that image, I was CEO of a tech company and it was just a sliding doors moment to dedicate my life to getting more women and girls in sport and pivoting into working in sport.” – Sophie Power
The Recovery Process
Despite her incredible determination, Power admits that the recovery process was challenging. She had only two hours and 17 minutes of sleep in three nights, which left her feeling “destroyed.” It took several months for her to fully recover and resume training.
Pro Tip: Proper rest and recovery are essential for any athlete, especially after pushing the limits in a record-breaking performance like Sophie Power’s.
