Rockets Re-Sign Fred VanVleet to 2-Year, $50M Deal

In a move that demonstrates their commitment to their talented young core, the Houston Rockets have decided not to exercise Fred VanVleet‘s $44.9 million team option and will instead re-sign him on a two-year, $50 million deal, reports ESPN’s Shams Charania. The two-year pact includes a player option for the second season.

According to Kelly Iko of The Athletic, VanVleet’s new deal will have a flat structure, paying him $25 million next season, with his option also worth $25 million.

Rockets’ Offseason Moves

The Rockets’ additions of VanVleet, Dillon Brooks, Jeff Green, and coach Ime Udoka in the 2023 offseason paved the way for a solid 41-41 season in 2023-24. Last season, the Rockets finished with a 52-30 record and nearly upset the Warriors in the playoffs.

Kevin Durant Trade and Financial Flexibility

The Rockets recently acquired 15-time All-Star forward Kevin Durant in a blockbuster trade, which freed up cap space. By retaining VanVleet on a cheaper deal, the Rockets regain financial flexibility and project to be comfortably below the league’s first tax apron and luxury tax line.

This move allows the Rockets access to the $14.1 million non-taxpayer’s mid-level exception this offseason, per Keith Smith of Spotrac.

Looking Ahead

While VanVleet’s new contract is a short-term agreement, both sides are open to a longer-term partnership in the future, according to ESPN’s Charania.
