Rangers Add Veteran Outfielder on Minor League Contract
The Texas Rangers have agreed to a minor league contract with veteran outfielder Andrew McCutchen, according to a person with knowledge of the deal. The agreement was reported on Thursday.
Contract Details
McCutchen, 39, will earn $1.5 million if added to the Rangers’ 40-man roster and plays in the major leagues. He has three weeks of spring training to earn a spot on the team.
Competition for a Roster Spot
The Rangers currently have a well-stocked outfield with emerging stars Wyatt Langford in left field and Evan Carter in center field, along with newcomer Brandon Nimmo in right field. However, Carter’s injury history (63 games played in 2025) creates a need for outfield depth.
McCutchen’s right-handed bat could also provide a valuable complement to designated hitter Joc Pederson, who is expected to see significant playing time.
Return to the National League
McCutchen spent the last three seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the team that originally drafted him in 2005. He played his first nine MLB seasons with the Pirates, earning five All-Star selections and winning the National League Most Valuable Player award in 2013.
Prior to rejoining the Pirates, McCutchen played for four other teams between 2018 and 2022.
2025 Performance
Last season, McCutchen played in 135 games, hitting 13 home runs, driving in 57 runs, and posting a .700 OPS.
The person confirmed the deal to the AP on condition of anonymity because the contract had not been finalized and he had yet to complete a physical examination.
