“The best match in history”

  • Match: Wimbledon 2008 final
  • Result: Win against Roger Federer: 6:4, 6:4, 6:7(5), 6:7(8), 9:7

For many tennis fans this is Wimbledon-Finale 2008 to this day the greatest match of all time.

It had all the ingredients an epic duel needs: two of the best players of all time, two completely different styles, the immaculate white of the clothes on the hallowed turf and a long history.

Nadal had to compete in Federer’s “living room” as he sought his sixth title there.

An unforgettable match followed. The two opponents dueled for almost five hours at the highest level, with unrelenting intensity.

Nadal won the first two sets, Federer won the third and fourth rounds in a tie-break. After 16 games in the fifth set, the winner was finally determined: Nadal was crowned Wimbledon champion for the first time.

A few months ago, Federer recalled that match in a graduation speech at Dartmouth College: “Looking back, I feel like I lost the first point of the match. “I looked across the court and saw a time that had destroyed me a few weeks before at Roland Garros and I thought maybe he was hungrier than me,” he confessed. “I didn’t realize until the third set that I had won the last five titles and that we were playing on grass. But it was too late.”
