Rafael Nadal won his opening match in his last participation in the ATP tournament in Rome despite numerous uncertainties. The record winner of the Masters in the Foro Italico defeated the courageous Belgian qualifier Zizou Bergs on Thursday 4:6, 6:3, 6:4 and will now face world number nine Hubert Hurkacz from Poland in the second round.

In preparation for his last French Open (from May 20th), Nadal had previously failed in the round of 16 at the Masters in Madrid.

Nadal initially had a 3-1 lead in the first set, but had to give it up after two breaks from Bergs after 47 minutes. Despite a few wobbles at the end, he confidently won the second round.

In the third he managed a break to make it 2-1, but he never gave up this narrow lead. After almost three hours, Nadal finally converted his first match point.
