Published: March 2, 2026

Travel Disrupted After Explosions Near Meydan Racecourse

DUBAI – A number of Irish and European racing figures are currently awaiting guidance on when they can return home from Dubai, following disruptions caused by recent regional conflict. The situation unfolded after Saturday’s Super Saturday fixture at Meydan racecourse, with many professionals urged to remain at the Meydan Hotel.

The disruption stems from Iranian attacks that have caused damage to Dubai International Airport. The United Arab Emirates government reported intercepting 137 missiles and 209 drones.

Dubai International Airport is reportedly closed until at least Monday.

Surreal Scene at Meydan

Racing continued at Meydan despite the political and military uncertainty. English trainer Jamie Osborne described the scene as pretty surreal. You’re standing in the paddock watching missiles get shot through the sky.

Sheikh Mohammed, the ruler of Dubai, was present at the races and observed his Godolphin horse, Rebel’s Romance, secure a Group Two victory.

Irish Contingent Affected

Among those awaiting travel arrangements is trainer Johnny Murtagh. He reported that many within the racing community, including jockeys Ryan Moore and Oisin Murphy, are currently sheltering at the Meydan Hotel. Murtagh stated, Everybody from the racing community is here in the Meydan, well, 90 per cent of those who came for Super Saturday. We’re just holding tight.

Irish jockey Colin Keane competed in the event, riding Crystal Black, which finished last. Fellow Irish jockey Ben Coen rode Alakazi to a fourth-place finish in the Group Two Singspiel Stakes.
