Kochetkov took over for Frederik Andersen, who had been the starting goalie for all seven of Carolina’s previous playoff games.

In the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Kochetkov played in one game and has served as a backup in four other games, including one in the previous season. The 24-year-old has a 4.31 goals against average and .858 save percentage during the playoffs.

Andersen conceded a total of eight goals in the first two games against the Rangers, a 4-3 defeat in Game 1 and a 4-3 loss in overtime in Game 2. Carolina is currently behind in the series with a score of 2-0 out of a possible 7 games.

Since the start of the playoffs, Andersen’s record is 4 wins and 3 losses with an average of 2.58 goals allowed per game, and a save percentage of .899. Against the Rangers, he has stopped 54 out of 62 shots, resulting in a save percentage of .871. In contrast, he allowed 12 goals on 124 shots in five games against the New York Islanders in the previous round.

Andersen had a successful start to the season with a record of 4 wins, 1 loss, and 0 ties. However, doctors found a problem with his blood clotting and he was unable to play in 50 games from November 4th to March 7th. When he returned, he had a record of 9 wins, 1 loss, and 0 ties with impressive stats including a 1.30 goals-against average, .951 save percentage, and 3 shutouts in 10 games. This helped his team, the Carolina Hurricanes, finish second in the Metropolitan Division with a record of 52 wins, 23 losses, and 7 ties.

Brind’Amour stated that Freddy has been performing admirably, but has also been playing a significant amount. He believes taking some time off would be beneficial.

Kochetkov, who recorded a record of 23 wins, 13 losses, and 4 ties with a 2.33 goals-against average and .911 save percentage, along with 4 shutouts in 42 games (with 40 starts), has been absent from play since April 14. This was when he earned a victory against the Chicago Blackhawks during regular season play, where he made a total of 14 saves.

Pyotr Kochetkov has been named as the starting goalie for the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Second Round against the New York Rangers at PNC Arena on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on multiple channels including MAX, TNT, TruTV, SN, TVAS, and CBC.

According to Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour, “He has a unique temperament. Freddie remains composed and collected while ‘Kooch’ is more fervent and expressive. However, they are both skilled goaltenders.”
