The Pro Recco the “Bianchi” of Trieste wins 11-16 on the ninth day of the championship and continues its march to the top of the table with full points. Poker for Di Fulvio and Iocchi Gratta.
Sukno chooses Negri in goal, with Gardella replacing the feverish Haverkampf. The start of the Biancocelesti is devastating: the Italian champions go 0-4 after less than three minutes thanks to two penalties converted by Condemi and a brace by Di Fulvio, lethal from position 3. Mirarchi meanwhile loses Razzi, guilty of a return anticipated from the cockpit, and Pro Recco increases the gap with Presciutti whose shot hits the crossbar and then Lazovic’s back (0-5). Trieste finds the net before the siren thanks to Mladossich’s advance on the left side which makes it 1-5 which ends the set. Less than a minute into the second half and Presciutti smashes the assist from the left-footed Gardella into the net at the far post. Mezzarobba responds immediately, but more bad news arrives for Trieste: Mirarchi also loses Sedlmayer due to three fouls and Pro Recco capitalizes on their superiority with a lucky rebound that rewards Iocchi Gratta, who scores with a header (2-7). Trieste, however, remains in the game and shortens with Marziali in the center and Petronio from position 4. The hosts get even closer to Pro Recco 42 seconds from the siren with Mezzarobba, in superiority (5-7), the last goal before the substitution campo.Del Lungo replaces Negri in goal at the start of the third half, Pro Recco starts strong again: Durik gets a penalty which Condemi converts, then Di Fulvio makes no mistake in a counterattack (5-9). Another restart, concluded by Iocchi Gratta, brings Sukno’s boys into double figures midway through the quarter. The Italian champions’ break continues with Hallock, who hits the target with a nice turn to the center (5-11). Three minutes before the siren, Marziali takes advantage of an indecision from the Biancoceleste defense and beats Del Lungo from close range. The goalkeeper can do nothing about Draskovic’s penalty (7-11), but 54 seconds from the siren Younger beats Lazovic and closes the third half on +5.
Trieste tries to make the last half come alive and in less than two minutes Draskovic on a counterattack and Petronio from position 2, in double superiority, beat Del Lungo (9-12). The home team with Oliva between the posts did not have to deal with Iocchi Gratta scoring twice more in less than a minute (9-14). Poker for Iocchi Gratta and poker also for Di Fulvio with his +6 less than four minutes from the siren which sounds like a sentence for Trieste, then scoring with Mladossich and Petronio (11-15) before the final seal by Younger.
“We achieved an important victory on one of the most difficult pitches in the championship – the words of Iocchi Scratch – Trieste plays high level water polo, we are happy because it wasn’t easy to win these two close away games with a fairly difficult trip. On a personal level, I am happy with my performance, both in the offensive phase and behind it, I am also working hard on my body and I thank the staff for the work they are doing.”.
