Sparta Prague Eliminated from MOL Cup After Penalty Shootout Defeat

Sparta Prague’s hopes of defending their title in the MOL Cup were dashed following a penalty shootout loss to Mlada Boleslav. The defeat comes as a blow to the club, but head coach Brian Priske has accepted full responsibility, labeling the performance fully deserved.

Disappointing Performance Leads to Early Exit

The match ended scoreless after both normal time and extra time, forcing a penalty shootout. Mlada Boleslav emerged victorious with a 4-2 win, sending Sparta crashing out of the competition. This marks the first time since the 2017/18 season that Sparta will not feature in the semi-finals, ending a four-year streak of reaching the final.

Priske Takes Responsibility

“A poor performance from us. Not only in 90 minutes, but similarly in extra time. Poor performance both in attack and defense, we gave them a lot of chances. The elimination from the domestic cup is fully deserved.”

Priske was critical of his team’s performance across the board, highlighting deficiencies in both attack and defense. He emphasized the lack of energy, hunger, desire and passion as key factors in the defeat.

Individual Struggles Contributed to the Loss

The coach also pointed to individual performances as falling short of expectations.

“Individually, we did not reach the required level. This applies to all three offensive players, wingbacks and midfielders. It falls on all of us.”

Priske expressed disappointment rather than anger, stating, I don’t think it’s about anger, it’s a bad emotion. I’m disappointed like everyone in the dressing room. He further added, It wasn’t at our level. It hurts. I’m very sorry for how we presented ourselves as a club today. It wasn’t good.

Derby Clash Remains a Priority

Despite the cup exit, Priske insists the team’s focus remains on Sunday’s league derby against Slavia. He stated that the importance of the derby remains unchanged, despite the recent setback. Sparta currently trails Slavia by seven points in the league standings.

The meaning of the derby will always be the same. Of course, elimination hurts. One of our goals was to produce it to the final again. It will be a new match on Sunday. In the league, it is key. We all understand the position we are in. It will not change our approach. But now we have to come to terms with the poor performance we showed in Boleslav, Priske explained.

Sparta Prague will need to quickly regroup and refocus as they prepare for the crucial league derby against Slavia. The team will be looking to translate this disappointment into motivation for a strong performance on Sunday.
