From Baltimore to the World Stage: Presley Smith’s Badminton Journey
BALTIMORE – In a sport often overshadowed by basketball and football in the U.S., a Maryland native is making strides on the global stage. Presley Smith, a 22-year-old from Baltimore, has emerged as one of the top badminton players in the world, representing Team USA in men’s doubles and mixed doubles.
Early Beginnings
Smith’s journey began at the tender age of nine, when he picked up a racquet in Baltimore. But his path was far from conventional. “Baltimore City schools in general, they only have badminton for the girls,” Smith recalled. “I never played in like the school circuit. Baltimore County had a boys’ team, but I never got into it.” Instead, Smith trained diligently on his own with his coach.
A Betting on Talent
After graduating from high school, Smith made a courageous decision to move to Taiwan, his family’s homeland, to pursue badminton professionally.
“I was, of course, skeptical… I have no friends in Taiwan, and all my friends are here, they’re all going to like prestigious universities… It was very, I was very scared that it wouldn’t work out or something bad would happen.”
