Pickleball Boom in Toulouse: Smash Pickleball Club Attracts Hundreds Weekly

Pickleball, a rapidly growing sport, is captivating players in Toulouse, with over 500 individuals flocking to the Smash Pickleball Club each week. The club’s popularity is fueled by regular tournaments and ambitious plans for future expansion, including a culinary partnership.

A New Sport Takes Root in the Pink City

Located in the north of Toulouse, the Smash Pickleball Club offers a unique sporting experience. The sound of pickleballs hitting rackets fills the concrete complex, a testament to the sport’s growing appeal. Pickleball, originating in the United States, is played on a smaller court than tennis, using a low net and a perforated plastic ball.

Since its opening last September, the club has become a hub for pickleball enthusiasts. Players can reserve one of the seven available courts online for hourly or 90-minute sessions. Coaching is available on Mondays, singles tournaments on Tuesdays, and doubles on Wednesdays.

“People come all the time, but we similarly very often see new faces: things go quite well,” says Nicolas Lemozy, manager.

A WhatsApp group, boasting over 300 members, facilitates team formation and event coordination. On tournament nights, it’s always full, Lemozy adds.

Pickleball Gains Official Recognition

In January, pickleball was officially recognized by the French Tennis Federation, bolstering the sport’s legitimacy and opening doors for further development. This recognition paves the way for hosting the first French championship.

The club is also expanding its offerings. A partnership with a local chef will bring a burger stand to the outdoor area when the weather improves. We aim for to bring a festive atmosphere, with around fifty seats, a sort of tavern, explains Lemozy. A large screen will also be installed to broadcast the Football World Cup matches starting in June.

Local Talent and Future Growth

Toulouse-based player Mathieu Roy, currently ranked fourth in France, trains at the Smash Pickleball Club. The club’s facilities include six indoor courts, ensuring year-round play.
