Pickleball Surge in Dietzenbach: A New Sport Unites the Community
A Growing Community
Dietzenbach is experiencing a boom in pickleball participation, with the SG Dietzenbach department growing to 75 members since its founding in November. The sport is attracting a diverse range of players, fostering a sense of community among residents.
What is Pickleball?
Pickleball is more than just a sport for Hai Long Nguyen, the head of the pickleball department at SG Dietzenbach. He as well sees the trend sport as a way to bring different people together, whether young or old, man or woman.
The sport, originating in the United States, is a combination of tennis, table tennis, and badminton.
The department’s rapid growth – from 20 to over 70 members in a few months – demonstrates the sport’s appeal. The journey began when Dietzenbach lacked a suitable playing space. In spring 2025, the city collaborated with Skechers to build three pickleball courts at the Waldstadion.
Accessibility and Benefits
Pickleball’s accessibility is a key factor in its growing popularity. Patrick Elges, deputy department head, notes, “You can play it even at the age of 80 if you are still somewhat fit.”
The sport is easy to learn, and the physical demands are lower than those of tennis or badminton due to the ball’s design – it has holes, causing it to fly slower and allowing for strategic play. “You play with patience,”
Nguyen explains.
Beyond fitness, pickleball enhances hand-eye coordination, reaction speed, and balance, offering particular benefits for seniors. Equipment is also affordable, with basic sets starting around 15 euros.
Overcoming Challenges and Future Plans
Establishing the department during the winter season presented challenges in securing indoor training times. Though, the city assisted in finding solutions, with training now held on Sundays at the Philipp-Fenn-Halle and Thursdays at the Rainbow School.
Hai Long Nguyen envisions Dietzenbach becoming a pickleball hub, attracting players from across Germany for tournaments and fostering a larger community. “The sport is growing strongly,”
he states, emphasizing its potential for community, integration, and cultural exchange.
