Pau Golf Club 1856: A Historic French Course with British Heritage
Nestled in the heart of Béarn, the Pau Golf Club 1856 is an institution with a fascinating history and a vibrant present. Established in 1856, it is home to prestigious tournaments like the Kilmaine Cup and the Grand Prix de Pau. With its meticulously maintained 33-hectare course and an average age of 70 among its 590 members, the club reflects on its rich past while embracing modernity.
A Historic Course with British Roots
Founded by British aristocrats, including Lord Hamilton, Colonels Hutchinson and Astruther, Major Pontifex, and Archdeacon Sapte, the course reflects its English heritage in its elegant clubhouse, built in 1880s in the Pure Victorian style. Over the years, the club has transferred certain documents to the community archives but retains an exceptional miniature museum of cups and period medals, attracting golf enthusiasts from around the globe.

The club, active year-round, offers an open day on September 13 to introduce new players to the sport. Golf professional Stéphanie Arricau and around 70 young golfers within the school are driving the club’s efforts to “democratize” the practice and nurture its future. Michèle Régnacq, the club’s secretary, encourages schools to participate in discovery days.
An Important Land Operation
In June 2022, the Billère municipal council validated an operation where the Pau Golf Club 1856 purchased the 25.5 hectares it had been renting for 2.79 million euros. The club sold a plot of 16,947 m² for 675,000 euros, regularizing its situation and ensuring the course’s future. Alain Bruneau, the club’s president since 2024, approved the operation, which allows the municipality to fund future investments like the performance hall.

Key Competitions and Visitors
The Kilmaine Cup is an annual golf competition between the Pau Golf Club 1856 and the Biarritz Golf Course. The Grand Prix de Pau, first held in 1894, is one of the oldest motorsport events in France. Famous golfers like Jean Van de Velde, José María Olazábal, and Severiano Ballesteros have played on the golf course, adding to its prestige.
