Indonesian Badminton: A Look into Their Performance at the BWF World Championships 2025

Indonesia’s Performance Falls Short of PBSI’s Expectations

In an unexpected turn of events, Indonesia’s badminton team fell short of their ambitious goals at the recently concluded BWF World Championships 2025. The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) admitted that they had failed to live up to expectations, settling for a bronze medal instead of the coveted gold.

“These results are certainly not in line with PBSI’s objective. However, we see the developments of young athletes as work in accordance with the PBSI program.”

Putri Kusuma Wardani: A Bright Spot in Indonesia’s Campaign

Although Indonesia did not achieve their target, there were still positives to take away from the tournament. One such bright spot was the performance of Putri Kusuma Wardani. The 23-year-old put up a strong fight against the eventual champion, Akane Yamaguchi from Japan, in the semi-finals, before eventually settling for the bronze.

CEU Hian, PBSI’s head of development and achievements, praised Kusuma Wardani’s performance, highlighting her confidence and growth. He believes that with more experience and refinement in her skills, she could become a force to reckon with in the future.

Young Talents Show Promise

Indonesia’s young talents also made their mark at the tournament. Alwi Farhan and Jafar Hidayatullah/Felisha Albert Nathan made their debut at the world championships, reaching the last 16 and the third round respectively. Although they lost to stronger opponents, their resilience and fight were commended by CEU Hian.

“They still need competition experience, in addition, of course, the technical and physical addition of the assessment of the match,” Hian noted.
