Buenos Aires – Paola Suárez has been officially presented as the new captain of the Argentine tennis team for the Billie Jean King Cup, the premier international team competition in women’s tennis. The announcement marks a significant transition for the team following the departure of Mercedes Paz after seven seasons.

Suárez’s Vision for the Team

Suárez, a decorated player with a career-high ranking of No. 9 in singles and No. 1 in doubles, expressed her enthusiasm for the role. I am happy to be able to provide the players with the experience that all these years of tennis gave me, she stated during a press conference.

Her primary focus will be fostering a strong connection with the players. Now I appear in tennis from another place, I am on the other side. What I want to achieve most is to connect with the players, supply them confidence and so that they can lean on me with any problem they may have, Suárez explained.

Upcoming Challenges: The Americas I Group

Suárez’s debut as captain will be at the Americas I group, held at the Racquet Complex in Ibagué, Colombia, from April 8-11, 2026. The competition offers two qualifying spots for the Billie Jean King Cup playoffs.

The Argentine team has already begun preparations, with Suárez conducting a training session with players including Nadia Podoroska, Julia Riera, and Lourdes Carlé.

Suárez acknowledged the function of her predecessor, Mercedes Paz, and expressed her intention to build upon the existing foundation. She emphasized the importance of continuity and maintaining the team’s positive trajectory.
