Ovechkin Closing In on Gretzky: Capitals Superstar Nears Historic Goal Milestone
Alex Ovechkin is on the cusp of an NHL legend, one goal away from tying Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 894 career goals. The Washington Capitals forward tallied his 893rd goal – and his 40th of the 2024-25 season – during Friday’s contest against the Chicago Blackhawks. This electrifying moment occurred in the first period, showcasing Ovechkin’s unparalleled skill and tenacity.
The play itself was a masterclass of offensive execution. Capitals forward Dylan Strome initiated the sequence, threading a pass from behind the net to a streaking Ovechkin. With remarkable precision, Ovechkin unleashed a one-timer that narrowly missed the post before deflecting off Blackhawks goaltender Spencer Knight into the net.
“It was a great pass from Dylan,” Ovechkin stated post-game, “and I just tried to put it on net.”
Let’s take a look at the top five NHL goal-scorers of all time:
- Wayne Gretzky, 894
- Alex Ovechkin, 893
- Gordie Howe, 801
- Jaromír Jágr, 766
- Brett Hull, 741
Ovechkin’s lead over the next closest active player, Sidney Crosby, is staggering—over 370 goals. While the focus is currently on surpassing Gretzky, Ovechkin’s dominance also extends to individual season records. He boasts an astounding 14 seasons with 40 or more goals, a record that surpasses even Gretzky’s 12 and Mario Lemieux’s 10, with Marcel Dionne coming in third with 10. “It’s a testament to his dedication and work ethic,”
said Capitals coach Todd Reagle following the game. “He’s a relentless competitor, and he’s always striving to improve.”
Remarkably, Ovechkin’s pursuit of this milestone comes after a significant injury setback. In November, a collision with Jack McBain resulted in a fractured left fibula, sidelining him for over a month. Despite this, he returned with impressive poise, scoring in both of his first two games. Currently, Ovechkin’s goals-per-60-minutes rate stands at a career-high 2.2, and he’s also on pace for his highest goals-per-game rate since the 2019-20 season.
Beyond his individual achievements, Ovechkin’s performance has been instrumental in the Capitals’ success. Washington clinched a playoff berth, becoming the first team in the NHL to do so, a historic feat that underscores the team’s reliance on their captain. “He’s the heart and soul of this team,” Capitals GM Brian MacLellan commented. “When he’s scoring, we’re confident.”
With just two goals separating Ovechkin from Gretzky, the NHL world watches with anticipation. The next game is critical as the Capitals aim to build momentum heading into the playoffs.
