Understanding the Disciplines

Each discipline within figure skating showcases unique skills and artistry:

Singles Skating

Singles skating, for both men and women, emphasizes individual performance, featuring jumps, spins, step sequences and choreographed routines. Skaters perform both a short program and a free skate.

Pairs Skating

Pairs skating involves a man and a woman performing elements requiring strength, precision, and unison. These elements include lifts, twist lifts, throw jumps, death spirals, spin combinations, and choreographic sequences.

Ice Dance

Ice dance prioritizes rhythm, musical interpretation, footwork, and dance holds. Competitors perform a rhythm dance and a free dance, focusing on precision and connection to the music. It includes a rhythm dance and a free dance, with no overhead lifts or throw jumps, focusing on precision and musical connection.

The Team Event

The team event brings together the five disciplines from up to 10 nations. Each nation fields one entry in each of the eight segments. The top five countries advance from the short program/rhythm dance performances to compete in all four free skate/free dance performances.
