While the International Olympic Committee will not pay bonuses to medal winners at the 2024 Paris Olympics, many countries and regions have introduced incentives to encourage athletes to compete for medals for their countries.
Many countries offer financial incentives, but there are also more varied rewards such as compulsory military service, cars, livestock, apartments and even free meals.
AFP Sports summarizes the awards for gold, silver and bronze medalists from around the world.
South Korea
Olympic medal winners are exempt from 18 months of mandatory military service. In South Korea, men under the age of 28 are required to serve in the military.
Asian Games Gold Medalists Exempt From Military Service For example, soccer star Son Heung-min won a gold medal at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games, thereby avoiding military service.
