American Star Falters Under Pressure

The 2026 Winter Olympics witnessed a stunning upset in men’s figure skating as American Ilia Malinin, widely considered the gold medal favorite, plummeted to eighth place after a disastrous free skate. Malinin, nicknamed the “Quad God,” had entered the competition with a 14-competition winning streak spanning over two years.

The unexpected turn of events resonated with past Olympic competitors, including Canadian figure skating icons Patrick Chan and Kurt Browning, who experienced similar heartbreak on the world’s biggest stage.

Echoes of Past Disappointments

Both Chan and Browning expressed empathy for Malinin, recalling the immense pressure and unique challenges of competing at the Olympics. I felt for him. I really did. Because I was like, `Dude, I was there,” Chan said. I remember when I was experiencing this moment.”

Chan reflected on his own near-miss at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, where a mistake-filled routine cost him the gold medal, settling for silver. He described the mental toll the event takes, stating that the pressure can become overwhelming as expectations mount.

Browning, a four-time world champion, shared his experience as the heavy favorite at the 1992 and 1994 Games, where he faltered in both short programs and missed the podium.

The Unique Pressure of the Olympic Stage

Malinin’s Performance Breakdown

Malinin’s performance deteriorated significantly during the free skate, dropping from first to 15th place. He fell twice and completed only three of his planned seven quadruple jumps.

Chan suggested that the media frenzy surrounding Malinin, including interviews and appearances, may have contributed to the pressure. He also pointed to the mental strain of the six-minute warm-up and the 45-minute wait before performing.

Malinin attempted a quad axel – a jump he is uniquely capable of landing – but singled it on his second jumping pass, which Chan believes triggered a downward spiral.

Looking Ahead

Despite the disappointment, Chan expressed confidence in Malinin’s ability to learn from the experience and achieve future success. He’s young, he’s going to go to probably two more Olympics, and he is going to look back on this moment and be like, wow, I was so young and immature in a way. But we all went through that; I have my moments as well.”
