Norman Martial Arts Community Mourns Loss of Legendary Sensei Nicolas Plouy
Nicolas Plouy, a beloved and respected instructor of Norman martial arts, has suddenly passed away at the age of 49, leaving a void in the lives of countless students and the community he devotedly served. Plouy, known for his high standards and unwavering commitment, breathed life into AJIQ Caen, training over a hundred black belts in his 16-year tenure.
Remembering Nicolas Plouy: A Teacher Beyond Measure
Pascal Houel, the president of Calvados structure, reflects on Plouy’s profound impact, “What comes to mind when I think of Nicolas is his exacting standards and his warm humanity. He lifted his students up, both literally and figuratively, always maintaining a positive and encouraging atmosphere. Many parents crossed paths with him, and he transformed them into black belts.”
Line Andrès, former president of AJIQ Caen and current president of the Calvados judo committee, echoes these sentiments, “Nicolas brought out the best in his students. He had the unique ability to understand and connect with people, making seemingly insurmountable challenges feel accessible. His classroom was always filled with laughter and success.”
The Man, The Athlete, The Legend
Plouy, a 5th-degree black belt, began his martial arts journey with judo before branching out to jujitsu and kata. His proficiency earned him numerous accolades, including the French kata championship title this year, alongside his partner Kamel Ben Tefka. In 2024, he secured a silver medal at the European Championships. He was also a highly revered kata judge and interregional referee.
“Nicolas didn’t just preach; he put his teachings into action,” says Pascal Houel. “He was exceptional in every sense of the word and truly left an indelible mark on our community.”
A Final Farewell and A Legacy That Lives On
On Wednesday, December 10, 2025, students, friends, and family gathered at the La Haie Vigné room to pay their last respects to Plouy. Despite the profound loss, AJIQ Caen remains committed to carrying on his legacy. Classes will resume in January under the direction of Alexis Remars, and the club is aiming to rename the Normandy dojo in Plouy’s honor.
“Nicolas instilled in us a taste for effort and perseverance. It’s going to be very, very hard, but with his teachings, we will rise again.”
