Singapore – Nguyen Tien Minh, 43, saw his impressive run at the Singapore International Badminton Challenge approach to an end today after a heartbreaking loss in the men’s singles main draw. Despite reaching the main draw after a strong showing in the qualifying rounds, the veteran Vietnamese player was defeated by top seed Sholeh Aldil of Indonesia.

The match was closely contested, with Aldil taking the first set 21/15. In a dramatic second set, the score was tied at 20/20, and later 23/23, before a critical moment changed the course of the match.

Nguyen Tien Minh’s racket string broke while the score was tied 23-23 in the second set, leading to a 23/25 loss and a 0-2 defeat overall.

Qualifying Success and a Tough Draw

Prior to the loss, Nguyen Tien Minh demonstrated his continued skill and experience by winning two matches in the preliminary round. He defeated Au Wei Shan (Malaysia) and Kong Teck Joon (Australia) both with scores of 2-0, securing his place in the main draw.

He defeated Kong Teck Joon (Australia, world No. 497) 2-0 (13/21, 13/21) in the final qualifying match.

Other Vietnamese Players Compete

Nguyen Tien Minh wasn’t the only Vietnamese athlete in action. Nguyen Hai Dang (world No. 68) advanced to the second round of the men’s singles event after defeating Raghu Mariswamy (India) 2-1 (21/14, 16/21, 21/12). He will next face Hein Htut of Burma (world No. 137).

However, Phan Phuc Thinh was unsuccessful in his qualifying match and did not reach the main draw. Le Duc Phat too qualified for the men’s singles main draw upon registration.
