The noise was deafening. The atmosphere, white-hot. When Newcastle United took the field at the Velodrome, they did so facing a storm of passion from the home crowd that whistled and jeered referee Maurizio Mariani.

“The noise levels were certainly deafening before kick-off… A stunning tifo rose from the terraces with an accompanying banner reading ‘For my town, for my club’.”

Yet, the Magpies were ready for it. Under Eddie Howe’s stewardship, they had trained early and prepared differentially, keeping players mentally engaged and primed for the challenge. And it showed.

An Aggressive Start Pays Off

Aubameyang’s Masterstroke

Trailing 1-0, Marseille capitalized on a poor kick-off from Newcastle defender Fabian Schar. A quick succession of passes, including a through-ball from 17-year-old Darryl Bakola, released Aubameyang. Keeper Nick Pope rashly charged, only to be embarrassed by Aubameyang’s finished from a tight angle.

“It was far too easy for Timothy Weah to take a number of players out of the game… ‘A Marseille equaliser was not exactly a foregone conclusion’ – but keeper Nick Pope rushed off his line… caught in no man’s land as the forward nipped in and finished superbly.”
