The decision comes following a formal agreement with Comcast Spectacorowner of the current facility, and marks a significant change of direction for the NBA franchise.
As reported by Front Office Sports and taken from Palco23the project for the new pavilion, which should have been built in Market East area of Philadelphia, had been approved by the city’s municipal council.
However, the initiative he never got the full support of key players of the 76ers ecosystem. Jimmy Harritya member of the board of directors, expressed his frustration, declaring: «I’m so furious I don’t even know what to do“, adding that he felt “used as a pawn”.
Founded in 1946 as Syracuse Nationalsthe franchise has a successful history, with eleven division titles, five conference titles and three NBA titlesthe last of which dates back to 1983. 76ers new arena – Here’s what’s behind the waiver
The original goal of the new pavilion was to revitalize the difficult Market East shopping areathanks to a structure from 18,500 seats which would have stimulated economic and commercial activity in the area.
However, the 76ers have opted for a different approach, which includes partnering with Comcast Spectacor not only for continued use of the Wells Fargo Center, but also to explore the possibility of bringing a Women’s National Basketball Association expansion franchise to Philadelphia (WNBA).
BILLIONAIRE SPONSOR
Clark, record earnings for the WNBA star. But the salary is only 1% of the total
The Indiana Fever rookie earned an annual record for a WNBA player of $11.1 million, 99% of which she earned off the court.
76ers waiver arena – The NBA in evolution
The 76ers’ decision comes in a time of big financial changes for the NBA. The league has in fact proposed an increase in the debt limit for franchises, bringing it from 325 to 475 million dollars.
This change, scheduled for late December, reflects the exponential growth in NBA team ratingswhich have passed since 2018 from an average of $1.65 billion to $4.6 billion.
Despite the renunciation of the new pavilion, the agreement with Comcast Spectacor could open new opportunities for the 76ers and the city of Philadelphia. With a possible expansion of the WNBA and a closer partnership with the arena owner, the franchise’s future could be just as exciting, even without a new mega-venue.
