Expanding Netball’s Footprint in South America
Netball Argentina (NA) recently concluded its 4th National Coaching Conference, marking a significant step in the development of the sport throughout the South American region. A key component of this initiative involved inviting international coaches – individuals previously trained and supported through World Netball’s (WN) Strategic Development Funding (SDF) – to participate and share their expertise.
Strategic Development Funding Fuels Growth
In 2024, NA was awarded SDF by WN to bolster its efforts in neighboring South American countries. The focus of this funding has been on enhancing school Physical Education (PE) teacher training and overall coach development. This investment has enabled NA to extend its reach into Chile and Bolivia, providing crucial introductory coaching programs.
International Expertise at the Core
The coaching programs in Chile and Bolivia were led by Professor Maximiliano Cohen and Professor Aníbal Garcete Segovia, both of whom received training from Europe Netball Coaches Anita Navin (WN Coaching Advisory Panel Chair) and Nicky Fuller.

Professor Cohen spearheaded introductory training at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, resulting in a Chilean representative team competing in both the 2024 and 2025 Buenos Aires Open Tournaments. Professor Segovia followed suit at the University Institute of Physical Education in La Paz, Bolivia, leading to a Bolivian team’s participation in the 2025 Buenos Aires Open Tournament.
Conference Highlights Regional Collaboration
Building on this momentum, Professors María Elena Muñecas Montaña from Bolivia and José Aznaran Aravena from Chile, both graduates of the program, were invited to attend the 4th National Coaches’ Conference in Argentina earlier in 2026. This event brought together coaches from across Argentina, fostering collaboration and further developing netball within the South American region.
Looking Ahead
This initiative demonstrates a commitment to growing netball at the grassroots level, providing opportunities for both coaches and players to develop their skills and participate in competitive events. The success of the program highlights the importance of international collaboration and strategic funding in expanding the reach of the sport.
Pro Tip
Investing in coach education is a crucial step in developing a sustainable netball program at any level.
