The NBA drew inspiration from the WNBA, which already holds the Commissioner’s Cup during its regular season. The Commissioner’s Cup, now in its third edition, serves as a model for the NBA’s new competition.

The NBA has launched a powerful promotional campaign in recent months to familiarize fans, especially Americans, with this cup format, which they are not accustomed to.
The Cup will be played annually from November to December and will incorporate regular season matches before culminating in a single-match elimination phase.
The first NBA Cup match, where the champion will claim the coveted trophy, is scheduled to take place from November 3 to December 9, 2023. First, the 30 NBA teams have been divided into six groups of five based on their placement in the previous season:
