NBA Europe Launch Faces Uncertainty, Bundesliga Boss Says

The planned launch of NBA Europe in October 2027 is still shrouded in uncertainty, with key details regarding participants, format, and financial implications yet to be finalized. Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) managing director Stefan Holz has voiced concerns, stating the NBA needs to provide clarity on several outstanding issues.

Key Questions Remain Unanswered

Holz emphasized the demand for the NBA to address a range of questions, including requirements for arena standards and the criteria for team qualification. He highlighted specific concerns regarding a potential play-in tournament, asking, Do we have a permanent place in the possible play-in tournament, or even two? And how are these allocated? Is it only based on the ranking from the past season? And what if a club doesn’t aim for to do it for whatever reason?.

Collaboration with European Leagues Crucial

The BBL boss stressed the importance of a unified approach with other European leagues. In cooperation with the other European leagues, we also have to develop an overall position, formulate questions and an attitude, Holz stated. He called on both the NBA and FIBA, the international basketball federation, to deliver even more information to facilitate a collaborative response.

The NBA intends to launch its European league with an initial structure of ten to twelve permanent members, supplemented by four teams qualifying through sporting achievement. From Germany, Alba Berlin and Bayern Munich are currently considered the frontrunners for inclusion.

EuroLeague Competition

The NBA’s move into the European market comes alongside the existing EuroLeague, a privately organized competition that already features prominent teams like FC Bayern Munich. Currently, there are no indications of cooperation between the EuroLeague and the NBA.
