Mourning for Ukrainian backcourt player Iryna Glibko

Glibko was born on February 18, 1990 in Odessa and came to handball by chance when she was eight years old. She actually wanted to watch rhythmic gymnastics and badminton when she was given the opportunity.

In her home country, she played for Galychanka Lviv, Zaporozhye ZSEA (2009-11) and Podatkova Academiya Irpin from the age of 17. In 2012, she moved to Romania, initially playing one season for Danubius Galati. After playing for CSM Bucharest (2013-15) and CSM Roman, she came to SCM Ramnicu Valcea in 2017, where she was under contract until recently.

Glibko won the Romanian championship twice (2015, 2019), the Romanian Cup once (2020) and the Romanian Super Cup twice (2018, 2020). She was named top scorer twice (2013, 2018) and was named to the league’s All-Star team three times (2018, 2019, 2023).

“The Sport Club Municipal Râmnicu Vâlcea is deeply grateful for all the moments when Iryna was by our side, for every goal scored and for every smile on the faces of the red and blue fans. Her loss leaves a huge gap in our hearts, but also in the handball community,” said a statement from Ramnicu Valcea.

Die Romanian news agency Agerpres speaks of cancer. She had already experienced health problems for the first time in 2020, but after her comeback she led the team to their first World Cup participation in fourteen years in the 2023 World Cup qualifiers. She herself took part in the European Championships in 2012 and 2014.

The CSM Bucharest concrete: “We are very saddened by the tragic passing of our former player Iryna Glibko. Everyone at CSM Bucharest would like to express our condolences to her family and friends during this difficult time!”
