NEW YORK – Despite the arrival of Jeremy Sochan, rookie Mohamed Diawara continues to make his mark on the New York Knicks. The 51st overall selection in the 2025 draft showcased his confidence and scoring ability in a recent victory over the San Antonio Spurs, even drawing praise from Spurs star Victor Wembanyama.

In Sunday’s game against the Spurs, Diawara scored 14 points in just under 15 minutes of playing time. San Antonio seemingly overlooked him and Josh Hart, allowing Diawara to capitalize with several key shots.

Landry Shamet emphasized the team’s encouragement of Diawara’s aggressive mindset.

“Every time the ball came into his hands, I yelled at him to shoot. The kid remained aggressive. There aren’t many players with raw talent like his… It’s crazy: he’s what, 19 years ancient? (he would be 21 next month). I’m happy for him that he had a match like tonight.”

Shamet noted the unusual experience of being consistently open and the importance of Diawara embracing the opportunity. People reckon it’s easy because it’s open all the time but it’s weird when you look up and no one is coming at you. Shamet explained.

While Jeremy Sochan’s addition may affect Diawara’s playing time, coach Brown has made it clear that the rookie will continue to receive opportunities. Brown acknowledged Sochan’s experience and size, but emphasized Diawara’s potential.
