Spencer Horwitz homered twice, Jose Berrios went six innings and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Braves 9-5 on Saturday to keep the Atlanta team out of playoff contention.
With just 20 games remaining, the Braves have slipped behind the New York Mets, who defeated the Cincinnati Reds 4-0.
Berrios (15-9) allowed one run, five hits and one walk, setting a new career high for wins in a season. He struck out five batters.
Horwitz had four hits. He opened the scoring with a solo homer in the second inning and made it 2-0 with his second home run in the fourth. It was the second time he’s hit more than one home run in a game. He drove in three runs in the game.
Spencer Schwellenbach (6-6) gave up six runs, three earned, and 10 hits in five innings. It was the first time in 26 games that a Braves starter allowed more than three runs.
It was Schwellenbach’s worst performance in 11 starts. The right-hander had averaged less than three earned runs since the start of July.
After Horwitz’s second homer, Ernie Clement and Joey Loperfido hit back-to-back doubles to make it 4-0 in the fourth. Horwitz hit a double and scored on a groundout by Will Wagner to make it 6-0 in the fifth.
The Blue Jays extended their lead to 9-1 with three runs in the top of the ninth. Nathan Luke singled in a run, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. reached on a fielder’s choice and Wagner drove in a run with a single.
In the bottom of the ninth, Jarred Kelenic hit a walk-off single. The Braves loaded the bases on a single by Orlando Garcia, and Luke Williams followed with a two-run double. Blue Jays reliever Luis Frias was thrown out of the game after just a third of an inning.
Brandon Little then grounded out to Michael Harris II to make it 9-5, but retired Travis d’Arnaud on another grounder to end the game.
