Kyle Schwarber put his name in the Major League Baseball record books Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Philadelphia Phillies power hitter hit his 14th home run of the season as Pennsylvania’s leadoff hitter.
He surpassed Alfonso Soriano, who hit 13 home runs as the offensive leader in 2003 with the New York Yankees.
The homer gave Schwarber the MLB record for most home runs in a single season. He let Taj Bradley’s first pitch get by before hitting the second pitch 437 feet into the stands. It was his 35th homer of the season.
It’s the 45th time in his career that he has started a game with a long ball, including 32 since joining the Phillies in 2022.
After going through a 17-game drought and hitting just one home run in 23 games, Schwarber has hit seven home runs in his last eight games, including three as the leadoff hitter.
Schwarber, 31, leads the Phillies in home runs and RBIs (95) this season.
The meeting is still ongoing.
