Medvedev Wins Dubai Title as Middle East Crisis Disrupts Tennis Travel

The escalating conflict in the Middle East is impacting the world of professional tennis, leaving several players unable to travel. Daniil Medvedev has emerged victorious at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, but the circumstances surrounding the tournament’s conclusion and subsequent travel plans are far from typical.

Medvedev Claims Dubai Title by Walkover

Daniil Medvedev has won his 23rd career title and second in Dubai (previously winning in 2023) after Tallon Griekspoor withdrew from the final due to injury. This marks the first time Medvedev has won the same tournament twice. The final was not played.

“The situation is unusual, but basically the only thing that happened is that the airspace is closed,” Medvedev told Bolshe. “So no one knows when we will be able to leave. It is unclear whether the situation will remain this way for long or not.”

Players Stranded as Airspace Closes

Medvedev and Andrey Rublev were reportedly exploring options to leave Oman by private plane, with the Masters tournament in Indian Wells looming. Play in Indian Wells is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, with Medvedev’s potential start date being Saturday at the earliest.

Kazakh player Alexander Bublik was among those who managed to depart before airspace closures were fully implemented.

“We left Dubai thinking, ‘God willing, the flight will be smooth.’ We were just out of Iranian airspace when I checked the news and saw what happened,” Bublik wrote on Telegram.

According to the ATP, “a small number of players and team members” remain in Dubai. The organization stated its priority is the “health, safety and well-being” of all involved and is assessing travel conditions.

“At this time, travel conditions continue to be assessed in line with flight planning and official guidance. We will continue to provide appropriate support to ensure players and their teams can depart safely as soon as conditions permit.”
