Dusty May Reflects on Impressive Win
Following the game, Michigan head coach Dusty May shared his thoughts on the team’s performance and the keys to their success.
“I’ll begin with thanking our fans for staying with us. We made a lot of errors in the first half, and we felt like we were playing really great basketball at times, but just couldn’t capitalize. And in the past, that’s affected our defense, our energy, our togetherness.”

May highlighted the team’s ability to regroup at halftime and find new ways to play effectively on both ends of the court. He acknowledged UCLA as a “good basketball team” and praised their players, including Skyy Clark and Dent.
“And obviously, Skyy Clark is just now coming back, but man, he’s a weapon. And then you factor in Bilodeau as one of the stretch fives and shooting bigs have been our Achilles heel at times. And so you’re trying to figure out a way to receive those guys contained. And then obviously Dent being the number one point guard in the country. He’s a jet and was able to get in the paint in the first half at will.”

Key to Second-Half Dominance: Shooting and Rebounding
May attributed the team’s strong second-half performance to improved shooting and a focus on rebounding.
“I mean, the shots went in. I thought in the first half, It’s Money Burnett had three shots without anyone within the same area code, and they didn’t drop. And if one or two of those drop, then I reckon it just energizes.”
Dusty May
He as well emphasized the importance of the home-court advantage and the energy provided by the fans.
Looking Ahead: Matchup Against Purdue
With a record of 24-1, Michigan is poised for continued success. Although, Coach May is already focused on the next challenge: a road game against Purdue.
“This team has such a high ceiling, and we have such a long road in front of us. To be honest, I challenge our guys to turn the page to Purdue as soon as they leave the locker room today. We have a quick turn against a team with two preseason first team All-Americans, and a preseason number one ranking.”

Depth and Talent Fuel Michigan’s Success
May also praised the team’s depth and the contributions of players like LJ Cason.
“There’s a cumulative effect. I mean, LJ Cason is playing as well as just about any guard in our league the last couple games, and he’s a sophomore that’s waited his turn. He’s been patient, he’s stayed the course, and he’s growing up in front of our eyes.”

Honoring a Legend: Cazzie Russell
The game also featured a special moment with the return of Michigan legend Cazzie Russell.
“I seek to thank the guys from Alro Steel who gave the tickets for Cazzie and his family and friends and teammates. Obviously, he’s embedded in the lore of the University of Michigan, and he’s an unbelievable human being.”

Aday Mara’s Performance Against Former Team
Coach May also commented on Aday Mara’s performance against his former UCLA team.
“Proud of the big fella, nine and eight and three blocks. That doesn’t even do service to his impact on the games. And his former UCLA teammates, they love him as a human. Our guys love him, and they wanted to support him.”

Michigan’s dominant win over UCLA further solidifies their position as a top contender in college basketball. The team’s ability to overcome adversity and execute in the second half demonstrates their resilience and potential for a deep tournament run.
