Ex-Orient: Former Miami Heat Employee Accused ofBAD Randolph Shirt Heist
From the Heat of the Court to the Cold of Allegations
Ex-Miami Heat security personnel, Marcos Thomas Pérez, 62, has been brought before a court in the Southern District of Florida, facing accusations of a multimillion-dollar heist of rare, match-used NBA gear.
“Marcos Thomas Pérez, a Miami resident, is accused of stealing and selling replica t-shirts and other memorabilia used by the Miami Heat,” read a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Years of Privileged Access
Pérez, who had security clearance for the NBA and Heat from 2016 to 2021, had ample opportunity to exploit his position.
He had access to a storage room where old match-used t-shirts and other mementos were kept, intended for a future Heat museum exhibit.
A Million Dollar Score
- More than 400 t-shirts and other items were stolen, according to court documents.
- The total value of the alleged stolen goods exceeds $2 million, with many items sold online to intermediaries.
LeBron’s Jersey: The Most Coveted Catch
Among the most coveted items was a LeBron James game-worn jersey from the NBA finals, which Pérez sold for a cool $100,000.
Retracing its trail, that same jersey resurfaced at a Sotheby’s auction, fetching an astonishing $3.7 million. Such a hefty price tag for a single shirt underscores the magnitude of Pérez’s alleged crimes.
