Griekspoor Forced to Withdraw Ahead of Final

Daniil Medvedev has secured his 23rd ATP singles title at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after Tallon Griekspoor was forced to withdraw from their scheduled final due to a left hamstring injury. The unfortunate turn of events handed Medvedev the championship on Saturday.

Griekspoor sustained the injury during his semi-final victory over Andrey Rublev on Friday, landing awkwardly after a serve. Despite completing the match, he was unable to recover in time for the final.

Medvedev’s Historic Win

This marks the first time Medvedev has won the same tour-level event twice, having previously triumphed in Dubai in 2023. This proves also his second title of the 2026 season, following his win in Brisbane in January.

ATP Tour “Daniil Medvedev wins the same tour-level event for the first time in his career.”

The win brings Medvedev closer to returning to the Top 10 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, currently sitting at No. 11 and just 45 points behind No. 10 Alexander Bublik.

Griekspoor’s Disappointment

Griekspoor expressed his disappointment, stating, I have been better, that’s for sure. Unfortunately, I hurt myself during the semi-finals. I went to the hospital this morning and had a couple of scans, which showed something serious. It kept me from coming on court tonight and will keep me from the court in the coming weeks.

Medvedev Reflects on the Victory

Medvedev acknowledged the unusual circumstances of his win, saying, That’s what is crazy about it. I never did it in any city in the world, and the first time I do it, it’s [via] a walkover.

Tournament Continues Amidst Regional Concerns

Despite projectiles being seen over Dubai as Iran fired missiles, the doubles final went ahead. The tournament confirmed Griekspoor’s withdrawal late afternoon local time on Saturday.

This victory represents a continued resurgence for Medvedev, following a coaching change to Thomas Johansson. He previously won a tournament in Almaty last fall after a two-and-a-half-year drought, and followed that up with a win in Brisbane earlier this season.
