Max Holloway’s ‘Gladiator’ Mentality Fuels UFC Success

Max Holloway, the current BMF champion.

Max Holloway’s unwavering mindset has been instrumental in his success within the UFC, culminating in his recent victory and capture of the BMF title. Holloway didn’t shy away from defending his approach when facing criticism regarding his move to lightweight.

Overcoming Doubt at UFC 300

Prior to challenging Justin Gaethje at UFC 300, Holloway faced skepticism from those who questioned his decision to compete against a top lightweight contender.

Holloway was determined to prove his worthiness of the BMF title. He explained his perspective on the term, stating that he would have thrived in a different era.

“If I was born in a different time, I would’ve been a gladiator. The last time I checked, gladiators didn’t walk around with a scale asking what weight you [are],” Holloway told UFC on TNT Sports. “If you’re the BMF, you gotta step up and fight anybody.”

Holloway’s dedication paid off with a knockout victory over Gaethje in the final round, a moment that quickly went viral and earned him $600,000 in post-fight bonuses.

Inspired by a Legend

Speaking exclusively to Heavy Sports, Holloway revealed the inspiration behind his gladiator line.

Holloway drew inspiration from the late boxer Roger Mayweather, aspiring to establish himself as a pound-for-pound great by competing in the lightweight division.

He believes that his critics lack a comprehensive understanding of MMA.

“[The line is] like what Roger Mayweather said, Most people don’t grasp [expletive] about boxing.” And you can say the same about MMA. Most people don’t know [expletive] about MMA,” Holloway said. “It is what it is. People are going to sit there. They got a camera, microphone, YouTube channel, Twitch, Kick channel, and all of a sudden they’re reporters now.”

Holloway added:

“At the conclude of the day, that’s what they do. I live by the saying and the saying goes, a bee is not going to sit there and convince a fly that honey’s better than [expletive],” Holloway said. “Whatever’s your take is your take. I got no time for that, I can focus on myself and keep moving forward.”
