German Badminton Open: Kicklitz Falls to Weng in Round of 16
Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany –
German Hopeful Exits Tournament
Matthias Kicklitz (SV Fun-Ball Dortelweil) suffered a defeat in the round of 16 of the YONEX German Open Badminton Championships on Thursday, February 26, 2026. He lost to Weng Hong Yang of China in straight sets, 15:21, 12:21.
Despite the loss, Kicklitz expressed a positive outlook, acknowledging the strong support from the home crowd. This was my first time in the main field and the support was cool. Playing in front of your own audience and having the whole audience behind you is mega. I’m still a little disappointed,
he said.
Wildcard Opportunity and Team Perspective
Kicklitz earned his place in the main draw through a wildcard. Head national coach Hannes Käsbauer praised Kicklitz’s performance, stating Matthias took advantage of his wildcard opportunity and recorded a very nice win yesterday.
Käsbauer as well noted the overall performance of the German team, acknowledging both successes and areas for improvement. Unfortunately, we didn’t reach the quarter-finals again. Especially because this is a home tournament and the atmosphere is so good, that’s a shame. Of course, our top people weren’t there in the women’s singles and mixed doubles, but we still had a lot of people in action. And we also had our chances!
He highlighted strong performances in the mixed doubles and a victory for Miranda Wilson in qualification.
Looking Ahead for the German Team
Käsbauer emphasized the team’s commitment to development. We have young talents and will consistently continue on the path we have chosen and continue to work hard to do better in the near future.
