Teen Tennis Sensation Manon Dayan Conquers Wheelchair Tennis Despite Rare Illness
At 16 years old, French teenager Manon Dayan has achieved what many wheelchair tennis players take a lifetime to accomplish.
From Able-Bodied Tennis Hopeful to Wheelchair Tennis Champion
Manon Dayan, a teenager from Bourgoin-Jallieu, was once a promising able-bodied tennis player. But at just 13 years old, she was diagnosed with dystonia, a rare illness that eventually left her without the use of her legs.
Undeterred, Manon took up wheelchair tennis and, incredibly, has since won the prestigious Petits As tournament in the discipline. Here’s her inspiring story.
Discovering Wheelchair Tennis and Triumphing at Petits As
After her diagnosis, Manon discovered wheelchair tennis and embraced it with her characteristic determination. In no time, she returned to the courts, hungry for success.
Her hard work paid off when she recently won the Petits As wheelchair tennis tournament in Tarbes, France. She defeated compatriot Cléo Ginterdaele in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
I am very happy to have won, but it also made me a little sad for Cléo. She is my partner, my friend… and today my adversary.
