It is now official: basketball star Lou Williams has announced his retirement from the sport. At the age of 36, after a remarkable 17-season career in the NBA, Williams has decided to hang up his shoes. Notably, he holds the record for the most points scored in the history of the league as a substitute player.

Williams’ incredible impact as a substitute earned him the prestigious Sixth Man award three times, in 2015, 2018, and 2019.

With a total of 15,593 points, Williams concludes his career as one of the top 150 scorers in NBA history. Impressively, he scored 13,396 of those points while coming off the bench, surpassing the previous record held by Jamal Crawford, who ranks second, and Dell Curry, who ranks third.

Unable to secure a spot in the NBA for the 2022-2023 season, Williams bids farewell to the competition. His final season was with the Atlanta Hawks in 2021-2022.

Throughout his career, Williams played 1,123 regular season games, with 1,001 of those appearances coming as a substitute. He maintained an average of 13.9 points per game, reaching a peak of 22.6 and 20 points in two consecutive seasons while playing for the Clippers.

Having played for the Sixers, Hawks, Raptors, Lakers, Rockets, Clippers, and returning to the Hawks, Williams entered the NBA without college experience. He was selected as the 45th pick in the 2005 draft, ultimately becoming a steal given his prolific and illustrious professional career.
