Lossiemouth Stuns Constitution Hill in Unexpected Aintree Hurdle Victory

The Aintree crowd witnessed a fairytale ending as Lossiemouth, trained by Willie Mullins and ridden by Paul Townend, triumphed in the William Hill Aintree Hurdle. This victory came at the expense of Constitution Hill, Nicky Henderson’s superstar, who suffered a dramatic fall during the race, marking a significant turn in his season.

A Stunning Upset

Constitution Hill, previously considered a near-certain winner, was the overwhelming favorite heading into the race. His recent victory at Cheltenham, followed by a sensational display, had cemented his position as the top horse in the division. However, a combination of circumstances led to his downfall, highlighting the unpredictable nature of horse racing.

The race began smoothly, with Constitution Hill establishing an early lead. Nico de Boinville had found himself boxed in approaching the penultimate flight, however, where both horse and rider hit the floor,

explained to reporters following the race. This incident, coupled with Lossiemouth’s determined surge, created an opening that Townend expertly seized.

Mullins’ Perspective

Following the victory, Willie Mullins offered a gracious assessment of the situation, acknowledging the disappointment felt by the connections of Constitution Hill. I was disappointed for Michael (Buckley, owner), Nicky and Nico and the connections of Constitution Hill – and for racing,

stated. He elaborated on the strategic adjustments made to suit Lossiemouth’s stamina, noting that the two-and-a-half-mile distance proved to be a better fit than the shorter two-mile race at Kempton.

“When Paul made his move it has eventually paid off, but I was wondering had he done it too soon. Nico has a great habit of looking like he is under pressure and then finding another bit in the last furlong. A couple of times we’ve thought we had Nico beat and he’s actually got a little bit up his sleeve, so I did wonder if Paul had played his cards too early, but it was gifted to him so what could he do.”

Mullins confirmed plans to run Lossiemouth in Punchestown, provided she recovers well from the race. “I’d imagine we’ll go to Punchestown now as long as she comes out of this all right, that’s our normal plan. I’m not getting into if she runs in the Champion or Mares’ though! State Man will be going for the Champion so we’ll probably keep them apart.”
