Anton Gaaei: From Fighting to Rise to Ajax Champion
Resurrection at Ajax
Anton Gaaei, once fallen and maligned, has risen from the ashes to become a crucial player in Ajax’s championship race. After a difficult start at the Amsterdam club, Gaaei has transformed into a valued force, ready to clinch the title today if Feyenoord falters and Ajax secures three points against NEC.
“Anton is a machine on the flank and goes on,” praise Ajax coach Francesco Farioli. “Certainly on an offensive point of view… Those are just Premier League -worthy figures.”
Falling and Rising Again
Gaaei’s turnaround at Ajax is nothing short of remarkable. Arriving in Amsterdam as a right back from Viborg, he initially struggled with self-doubt and pressure. Swapped in matches and facing intense online criticism, Gaaei even deleted his Instagram page.
“At one point everything looked very dark for me. I had to go very deep to recover again.”
Turning Point
Slowly but surely, Gaaei started making a name for himself again, first in lesser competitions, then against top teams. His winning penalty against Panathinaikos, striking goal against FC Utrecht, assist against Feyenoord, and goal against AZ – Gaaei has evolved into a match winner for Ajax.
And when the Brazilian purchase Luca Rosa was sold to AS Roma, Gaaei stepped up to become Rensch’s regular replacement, leaving no room for doubt about his return to form.
Looking Ahead
Gaaei’s growth under Faroli’s “train your scars” approach has been nothing short of extraordinary. With the collective backing of his team, Gaaei now embraces the challenge of Ajax’s championship race, ready to bolster their chances.
“There is more in life than football alone,” reflects Gaaei. “On the one hand it is my life, but there is actually much more.”
