Loon op Zand Breaks Ground on New Community Hub
LOON OP ZAND – Construction of a new village hall in Loon op Zand officially began on Friday, March 6, 2026, just after 10:00 am. The groundbreaking ceremony was led by Alderman Suzan Mandemakers, Kees Roelofs of Stichting Dorpshuis, and builder BM van Houwelingen, marking the start of a project eagerly anticipated by the community for years.
A Long Road to Realization
The start of construction represents a significant milestone for the village, according to councilor Suzan Mandemakers. The project’s history dates back to 2015, when residents initially shared their ideas and wishes during a dream lab
. Initial plans proved unfeasible, leading to a renewed effort in 2022.
The path wasn’t without its challenges. Delays were encountered due to necessary flora and fauna research, including considerations for a bat population requiring additional protective measures before construction could proceed. Still, Mandemakers emphasized that preparations continued throughout this period, refining the plan and paving the way for the current phase.
New Home for Local Associations
Kees Roelofs, Chairman of the Dorpshuis Foundation, highlighted the need for a central meeting place for the village’s numerous associations. Currently, 37 clubs operate out of various locations throughout Loon op Zand.
The new village hall is intended to address this need, providing a central hub for activities, meetings, and sports. While it won’t feature a large sports hall like previous facilities, the building will offer multifunctional spaces suitable for indoor sports such as volleyball, badminton, and basketball.
Construction Underway
BM van Houwelingen from Hardinxveld-Giessendam will begin groundwork on Monday, starting with excavation and pile driving for the foundation. The contractor is committed to minimizing environmental impact, utilizing electric cranes where possible and lower-emission fuels when electric options aren’t feasible. Specialized partners, including Van der Buijs for mechanical installations and Hoppenbrouwers for electrical engineering, are also involved.
The initial phase of construction will involve approximately ten to twenty workers, with the workforce expanding to forty to fifty employees during later stages like facade installation and finishing.
Projected Completion in 2027
The village hall is currently scheduled for completion around March 2027, promising a renewed central gathering place for associations, residents, and visitors. The initiators envision the hall becoming a true living room of the village
, fostering community engagement and connection.
“This marks the start of a project that residents, associations and volunteers have been looking forward to for years.”
