Leeds United Faces Backlash Over Fan Reaction to Ramadan Pause
Leeds United is responding to criticism after a segment of their fanbase booed a planned pause in play during Saturday’s Premier League match against Manchester City. The pause was implemented to allow Muslim players from both teams to break their fast during Ramadan.
Fan Reaction Draws Condemnation
The incident occurred in the 13th minute of the match at Elland Road. A message was displayed on the stadium’s sizeable screen explaining the reason for the stoppage, but was met with a cacophony of jeers and whistles
according to reports.
Club and Manager Respond
Leeds United initially did not comment publicly on the incident. However, a generic email response from the club’s supporter liaison officer stated the club found the booing disappointing
and is looking into why this happened and what can be done moving forwards to prevent incidents of a similar nature happening again in the future.
The club is aware of the incident and it was disappointing that some supporters chose to boo during the pause in play to allow players observing Ramadan to break their fast.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke addressed the situation in a pre-match press conference before Tuesday’s game against Sunderland. He stated, To be honest, if it was really disrespectful in these terms because of the break, then you have to say we all have to learn out of this.
He also noted the break was unexpected for many, adding, During the game, it was not my feeling because it was a surprise for everyone that there was this little break.
Context of Previous Stoppage
Farke referenced a similar stoppage during a previous match against Manchester City, where Pep Guardiola gathered his players. He suggested some fans may have believed the current pause was a repeat of that situation, leading to the negative reaction. He stated, I am not sure everyone was aware when the sun went down and we had the first game against Manchester City and we had the stoppage when Pep [Guardiola] got all the players together and spoke to them.
He further explained, We had a such a good start to this game, we were battling them and all over them in the first 10 minutes and our supporters had the feeling they are doing the same as the first game and because of this they were booing.
Further Action Planned
The club acknowledged inadequate communication to supporters prior to the match against Manchester City. A similar pause may occur during Sunday’s FA Cup tie against Norwich City, and Leeds intends to provide information to fans beforehand.
