A big screen displays a message as play stopped for Ramadan.

Leeds United supporters have faced criticism after booing a brief pause in play during Saturday’s Premier League match against Manchester City, a stoppage implemented to allow Muslim players to break their fast during Ramadan.

Ramadan Pause Met with Disapproval

Play was halted in the 13th minute at Elland Road, with a message explaining the reason for the interruption displayed on the stadium’s big screen. The reaction from a section of the home crowd was negative, prompting condemnation from both Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and the anti-discrimination organization Kick It Out.

Guardiola Calls for Respect

“It’s the modern world, right? Respect the religion, respect the diversity. That is the point.”

Pep Guardiola

Guardiola emphasized the importance of respecting diversity and religious beliefs, noting that the Premier League had authorized a one-to-two minute break for fasting players.

Kick It Out Expresses Disappointment

Kick It Out released a statement expressing its massively disappointing reaction to the booing, highlighting that the pause has been an agreed-upon protocol for several years.

“This was compounded by the fact that an explanation was displayed on a big screen inside the stadium. Pausing the game to allow Muslim players to break their fast during Ramadan has been an agreed protocol for several years now. It’s an important and visible part of making the game welcoming for Muslim players, and communities.”
