In a significant show of commitment, Malaysian badminton star Lee Zii Jia has agreed to join the national team for the upcoming Thomas Cup campaign, setting aside previous discussions regarding image rights fees. This decision comes as Malaysia aims to end a 34-year drought for the prestigious title.

A Commitment to the Nation

Zii Jia, a Paris Olympic Games bronze medallist, had been in negotiations with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) regarding compensation for image rights, a common consideration for professional athletes. However, recognizing the importance of the Thomas Cup for the nation, he has chosen to waive those fees.

The Thomas Cup Finals will be held in Horsens, Denmark, from April 24 to May 3.

Zii Jia expressed his gratitude to BAM President Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Aziz and Performance Committee Chairman Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei for their trust, and confidence. He hopes this agreement marks a positive turning point for both his career and the future of Malaysian badminton.

The former All England champion and Olympic Games bronze medallist will join Malaysia’s Thomas Cup 2026 squad, his team announced.
