Wimbledon Quarter-finalist Siegemund Crashes Out of US Open
Laura Siegemund, the lone German tennis player remaining in the singles competition of the US Open, suffered a straight-set defeat in the third round on Wednesday. The 37-year-old from Schwaben, who reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon this year, was no match for World No. 12 Jekaterina Alexandrowa, losing 0-6 1-6.
“Your type of game hasn’t changed, but she has increased really a lot in the past one or two years.”

Siegemund’s Struggles
Siegemund struggled to cope with Alexandrowa’s aggressive game, with the Russian blasting winners past her with ease. The German, who is known for her gritty, defensive style, could not find an answer to Alexandrowa’s power.
Hope in Doubles
Despite her singles exit, Siegemund has reason to smile in the doubles event. The 2020 US Open doubles champion and 2016 mixed doubles winner is through to the second round with her Brazilian partner Beatriz Haddad Maia.
What’s Next?
- Siegemund will now focus on the doubles event with her partner Haddad Maia.
- Alexandrowa moves on to the round of 16, where she will face either Leylah Fernanda or Shelby Rogers.
With her US Open singles campaign ended, Siegemund will now turn her attention to the Asian swing, starting with the Japan Women’s Open in Tokyo next week.
While this may not have been the result Siegemund was hoping for, there’s no denying the 37-year-old’s resilience and determination. Here’s to seeing her back on the court soon!
