Setback for Korean Basketball

South Korea’s momentum from recent victories against China was halted with a 77-65 loss to Taiwan in the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers on February 26th. The defeat represents a difficult start for newly appointed head coach Nikolais Majuls.

The loss to Taiwan, a team previously considered less competitive, is Korea’s third in history and the first since 2009 in FIBA tournament play. Prior to this qualifying period, Chinese Taipei had lost 13 out of 14 World Cup preliminaries and 11 consecutive games.

Game Recap

Korea initially started strong with a 7-0 run, but the lead was short-lived. Taiwan responded and took control, eventually building a significant lead with a 12-0 run spanning the second and third quarters, extending their advantage from 33-40 to 33-52.

The Korean team struggled with shooting accuracy, finishing with a field goal percentage of just 31.5%, and committed 18 turnovers. Taiwan’s Brandon Gilbeck dominated with 18 points and 16 rebounds.

Lee Hyun-joong led Korea with 18 points and 8 rebounds, but was ejected with approximately four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Player Performances and Coaching Decisions

Even as Lee Hyun-joong led the scoring, questions arose regarding player selection and usage. Yu Yoo-sang, who had been in great form, saw limited playing time in the first half, despite scoring 13 points in 14 minutes and 25 seconds after being subbed in.

Lee Jung-hyun, who had a strong performance in previous games against China, struggled from three-point range, making only one of four attempts.

“I wouldn’t be able to do my job if they wouldn’t do their jobs,” said Lee Hyunjung, deflecting credit to his teammates.

Looking Ahead

Despite the loss, Korea remains in second place in Group B with a 2-1 record. The team will next face Japan in Okinawa on March 1st in a crucial matchup. Coach Majuls has pledged to make adjustments and improvements following the disappointing performance against Taiwan.

“I did not play as promised in the match against Taiwan. In the next match (against Japan), I will have to play accurately and responsibly in order for the team to go one step further.” Coach Majuls via the Korea Basketball Association
