Kim Makes Statement in Spring Training Bullpen Session

Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Hyeseong Kim is making a strong case for the starting second base job, currently open with Tommy Edman recovering from surgery. Kim demonstrated his power, hitting a home run off of reigning World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto during a spring training session on Tuesday.

The homer, an opposite-field shot, drew a positive reaction from those in attendance. Kim’s performance highlights his determination to secure the position.

Competition for Second Base

Kim expressed his desire to be the Opening Day starter at second base, stating, As a baseball player it’s something I’ve always dreamed of. To start on an Opening Day roster at second base. That’s why I worked hard in the offseason for it and hopefully the results reveal. He is competing with Miguel Rojas, Alex Freeland, and recently signed Santiago Espinal for the role.

Manager Dave Roberts acknowledged Kim is in the mix alongside his competitors, who bring varying levels of MLB experience.

Edman’s Recovery Timeline

Whereas Edman is expected to miss Opening Day, the duration of his absence remains uncertain. Roberts indicated the team will not rush his return, prioritizing his full recovery. It takes a while to secure your body into baseball shape, so we’re not going to rush it. We want to put him in the best position, Roberts said.

Yamamoto’s Performance and Kim’s Continued Success

Yamamoto threw 33 pitches to eight batters, allowing three hits and recording two strikeouts. Kim was among the Dodgers’ key hitters who faced Yamamoto, including Teoscar Hernandez and Andy Pages.

Kim continued to impress, adding a hit before midfield against Yamamoto, bringing his total to two hits against the pitcher on the day. The two previously faced off on February 14th, where Yamamoto’s fastball reached 94 mph and broke Kim’s bat, but Kim still managed two hits.

Despite the competitive matchup, Kim and Yamamoto shared a friendly exchange after the session, demonstrating mutual respect.

Kim’s 2025 Performance

Kim played in 71 games during the 2025 season, achieving a batting average of .280 with 45 hits, 3 home runs, and 19 RBIs. He also recorded 13 stolen bases and was a part of the Dodgers’ playoff run, including the World Series.

Looking Ahead

Kim will continue to compete in spring training before joining the South Korean team for the World Baseball Classic. He expressed his commitment to performing well, stating his desire to show it well with actions.
