Tokyo World Championships: Kate O’Connor Shines in Pentathlon, Advances to Silver Medal Position
In a stunning display of athleticism, Kate O’Connor, the 24-year-old Irish pentathlete, secured three personal bests in four events on the opening day of the World Championships in Tokyo. O’Connor finished the day in the silver medal position with an impressive tally of 3,906 points.
From Bronze to Silver in the 200m Sprint
O’Connor’s most remarkable performance came in the 200m sprint, the final event of the day. Starting from lane seven, she clocked a third lifetime best of 24.07 seconds, securing second place in her heat behind Emma Oosterwegel from the Netherlands.
This explosive finish in the 200m moved O’Connor from the bronze medal position into silver going into day two, which features her favorite event, the javelin, along with the long jump and 800m.

Earlier in the day, O’Connor set personal bests in the 100m hurdles (13.44) and high jump (1.86m). She also threw a season’s best in the shot put (14.37m).

In the high jump, O’Connor cleared her first five heights at the first attempt. She then cleared 1.86m on her second attempt, improving her previous best by 2cm and coming close in her three efforts at 1.89m.

In the shot put, O’Connor’s best throw of 14.37m moved her into sole possession of third place, not far off her best of 14.61m.

Day two of the pentathlon features the javelin, her favorite event, in between the long jump and 800m. O’Connor will be looking to solidify her position in the medal fight with strong performances in these events.

In other Irish athletics news, three Irish athletes – Darragh McElhinney, Andrew Coscoran, and Brian Fay – went in the heats of the men’s 5,000m. McElhinney came closest to making the final, finishing 10th in the second heat with a time of 13:42.56.
