From Homecourt to Euro Champ
Justus Hollatz, the German basketball sensation, has come a long way from his humble beginnings in Hamburg. At 25, he’s already etched his name in the annals of European basketball history, becoming a European champion with FC Bayern Munich in 2023.
“I don’t make such a big head around everything today,” Hollatz Reflects, humbly reminiscing about his younger self.

Growing up in Hamburg, basketball wasn’t exactly a family affair for Hollatz. His mother works at Hamburg Tourism, and his father is in the IT sector, though he did play the sport recreationally. But it was the love for the game ignited in Hollatz’s siblings that fueled his passion:
“We always had a basket at home, and we were able to gamble from morning to evening during the summer holidays. My dad also played along, there were a few two-two battles with my brothers.”
Inspiration: Kobe Bryant
Hollatz’s hero? None other than the late NBA legend, Kobe Bryant. “Jersey, shoes, I had everything from him,” reveals Hollatz.
Leaving Home, Conquering the Euroleague
After time with Hamburg Towers, Hollatz ventured to CB Breogán in Lugo, Spain, then Turkey’s Anadolu Efes before settling at FC Bayern Munich.
“As a first step, it was perfect,” he remembers about his time in Lugo. His stint in Istanbul introduced him to a new level of professionalism and taught him about routine and discipline.
Return to Hamburg: Nerves and Emotion
Last April, Hollatz returned to Hamburg with FC Bayern to face his former team, the Towers. “I was more nervous. There are already a few that I know. My family, friends. Many still have me as the Justus of that time in their head,” he admitted.
“Today I want to show you how I developed.”
Lessons Learned
When asked about the most important lessons learned on and off the court, Hollatz shared:
- On the court: “I have improved my game intelligence, i.e., the team game and passing.”
“The serenity to enjoy life.”
